This is a 2 DVD set and these are the 3 movies that preceded the Diagnosis Murder TV show and the two movies after the show ended. If the Amazon listing showed the back side of the DVD set, we'd all have our answer! For this price I decided to take a chance. None of the other reviewers listed the movies and a search online didn't give me the answer either. That left me with the puzzle - are these really Diagnosis Murder made for TV movies or is this just a compilation of some of the 2 hour episodes from Diagnosis Murder? Sadly both the series and films are very dated now! For fans or completists only.Д«efore buying this, I wanted to know what movies are in this set. Watchable tv films, but don't expect the feel good factor of the show or its superior plots and storylines. It would have been nice to have them for those dialogue parts you miss. No subtitles/closed captions are advertised for this R1 disc set. There is some noticeable track hiss in the 1st film, so no mastering done there, but it is serviceable nonetheless. Considering the age of the films, this is so much better than some of the earlier DVD season releases of Diagnosis Murder which are little better than vhs. The video quality is surprisingly good for the films age, with some vivid colours over the three discs. The last two films pickup where the show ends, so were pleasing to watch and catch up with some of the old gang from the series. The film collection is of 5 films: three of 93 minutes length each, and two of ninety minutes each. One crops up as a type of village idiot in one of the latter movies and he cannot act to save his life, even as an idiot truck driver. I think the last two films are pretty good and closer to the show thanks to the appearance of some cast regulars and better scripts! However like the TV show the scripts incorporate walk in parts by various Van Dyke family members which ruin the narrative of the story. This unnecessary slapstick ruined the concept of a serious sleuthing doctor we got used to in the tv show which thankfully kept all this banality to a tolerable funny at times minimum, but it does not fit at all in these films.ДЄlso the Steve Sloan character in the earlier films is very wooden and 2D as were most of the film cast, but obviously Barry Van Dyke expanded his role and his acting as he went on over the years.

The first 3 tv films unfortunately do not quite capture the magic of the show, especially the 1st film 'Diagnosis of Murder,' as it is cringingly cheesy in parts e.g Doctor Sloan's roller skating down a busy highway full of traffic in pursuit of a car, or said doctor tap dancing in the hospital like Billy Elliot's granddad. I first caught this show(Diagnosis Murder) 25 years ago and it is still a pleasure to watch. There is no doubt in my mind that Dick Van Dyke is worthy of the label 'Legend of entertainment,' as very few actors/entertainers have done as much as he on TV.
